After visiting the 3d Center in Portland, OR, I was inspired to dig up some old 3d rendering experiments I had done a few years back.
A little tweaking (ahem) here and there… and I managed to put them together to create
a pretty good cross-eyed stereoscopic effect.
Basically you cross your eyes so that both images overlap in the center. It takes a little practice to focus on the combined image in the middle, but once you do, it's a pretty good 3d illusion.
The 3d rendering engine that generated the images is a cool package called POV-Ray. It's cool because it uses a text-based modelling/scripting language to describe the 3d objects.
I generated the pov-ray models using a perl script that made use of some planetary orbit algorithms that I dreamed up back in college or sometime… To get the 3d effect and the animation, I piled another perl script on top of that to generate the same povray model twice but at slightly different viewpoints and to tweak the various orbital parameters to make them so Undulicious…
Enjoy
I'm still working on the presentation here, these really should loop infinitely, and be much higher resolution with a more suitable aspect ratio.. For higher resolution/quality. check them out here: Undulations in 3d -chuck

Subject: Applications of Crossview
Nice animations, I've seen crossview in various application such as animated GIF, short-movies and 3d games. It's very inventive for 3D games and could be rather cool if you get the setting right. The experiment I saw didn't preform very well. The player controlled a tank model driving in an open scene with hills. The problem was that as the player, you'd likely try to look in the distance to check for hostiles or objects, so the crossview wasn't utilized very well.
To bad Crossview didn't get very popular, or at least, I didn't see much of it. Might be nice for a comeback someday.
